Year 4 Parent Summary – Summer 2013 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you had a lovely Easter Break.  This term we will be having our Numeracy workshop and hope that you will all be able to attend.  We have had great feedback from these workshops and know that you will find it useful in supporting your child. Below we have shared with you the main learning objectives for this next half term.

These are the main learning objectives this half term that we will be focusing on:

Literacy: (Film Narrative)

  • To watch and respond to a short film.
  • To use drama strategies to explore characters and film.
  • To write stories with dilemmas, organised clearly into paragraphs.

Numeracy:

  • To be able to read and interpret Venn and Carroll diagrams.
  • To develop mental maths skills/revising 3x,4x,9x, tables.
  • To solve money problems and use written methods (column addition) to work them out.
  • To use, read and write standard metric units of weight: (Kg, g)

RE:

(From Easter to Pentecost)

  • The children will be learning about the story of the coming of the Holy Spirit and how the   Gospel retells key events in the life of Jesus; resurrection and ascension.  The children will also be finding out ways of belonging to the community and how the local church is ‘good news’ for people and how everyone can have a part in this.
  • Our Connected Curriculum Topic is ‘Our Inner Space’

Our new topic is all about our inner body.  The children will be learning about how the heart functions and the effect of exercise.  They will also be finding out about the workings of the inner ear and eye.  The children will be doing various experiments to explore these body parts and may be asked to do their own research,

Our core learning skill is ‘Thinking Skills;

 General Reminders…

  • PE continues to be on a Tuesday for Year 4.
  • Music Sessions are continuing on Monday for 4T (guitars!) and Wednesday for 4M (trumpets and clarinets!).  Please remind your child the night before to get their instrument organised to take to school the next day.
  • Please do come to our Numeracy Workshop on 1st May 2013.

Year 3 Parent Summary – Summer 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

We welcome you back to Summer term 1. We look forward to the children progressing further and your on-going support.

These are the main learning objectives this half term that we will be focusing on:

Literacy:  –

The features of non-fiction and information texts and how to write them correctly. The features of a persuasive text, using arguments and how to write an interesting story.

-Using punctuation and paragraphs correctly, using the apostrophe for contraction, verb tenses -A focus on various types of grammar, especially beginnings and endings of words, synonyms and homonyms.

-Sentence structure, forming letters the correct way, using even spacing between words and neat handwriting, VCOPs to up-level their writing.

Numeracy: –

Adding using partition, doubles and near doubles, multiplication and division facts, direction and compass points, angles – right angles, acute angles, obtuse angles, reflex angles, comparing angles with right angles.

RE:

‘From Easter to Pentecost’ – The story of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost – different ways by which He came, ways of belonging to the community, Gospel accounts of key events in the life of Jesus: Resurrection and ascension,

Our Connected Curriculum Topics are:-

‘Creepy Crawlies’-Focus:

Science-

What is a plant/animal, differences between living and non-living things, what plants need to grow, life cycles of animals, habitats and food chains.

Our Core Learning Skills units are ‘Knowing me, knowing you.’

General Reminders…

  • Please ensure that all items your child brings to school are clearly labelled.
  • To encourage responsibility, children should bring in all notes and money and put them on the teachers’ desk in the morning. Please return all money for trips in a labelled envelope.
  • Finally please support your child in reading their books and learning their times tables as we will be continuing to have a big push this last term.

Year 2 Parent Summary – Summer 2013 – 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you all had a happy and holy Easter. The children will continue to prepare for the SATs papers that will take place after half term.  We ask that you continue to support your child in getting ready for these by helping them to achieve the objectives outlined below.

Literacy:   To identify features of non-fiction texts.

To write an information report.

To gather information.

To present information to others.

Numeracy: 

Miss Hughes-Crean’s group:

 

To add a multiple of ten to a 2-digit number e.g.  14 + 20

To subtract by counting back

To partition numbers into tens and units

To know addition facts for pairs of numbers that total 9 and 10.

Miss Duffy’s group:

 

To partition numbers into hundreds, tens and units.

To round numbers to the nearest 10.

To find the difference between 2 numbers by counting on.

Recognise halves and quarters of shapes and numbers of objects.

 

 

RE: (‘Good News’ and ‘Islam’)

  • To know that the Church family celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Good News of Jesus at Pentecost.
  • To learn about their Islamic sisters and brothers, how they live as a family and how they worship.

Our Connected Curriculum Topic is ‘The Seaside’.  This focuses on Geopgraphy skills.

  • To identify seaside locations within the UK.
  • To recognise the physical and human features of seasides.
  • To look at seasides from the past.
  • To identify different types of weather.

Our Core Learning Skills unit is ‘Speaking and Listening’.

General Reminders…

  • Most children arrive and are collected from school on time which is a great support to their learning.  If for any reason alternative arrangements for your child’s collection at the end of the school day have been made, please ensure you let us know.
