Year 5S

Welcome to Year 5S!

We are always busy in Year 5, please look below to see what we have accomplished.

Year 5 at the Science Museum

Recently Year 5 put their Science hats on for an exciting day of experiments in the Wonderlab at the Science Museum, South Kensington. They learned all about rocket propulsion, sound waves, electrical energy and how friction works. In the Wonderlab everybody was encouraged to take an active part in finding out all about the wonders of Science. Rocket to the moon anybody?

5S go to Seven Sisters Market

Children in 5S had a wonderful afternoon (yesterday) speaking (and singing!) in Spanish. The children were about to greet the restaurant owner in Spanish and name the traditional foods. Children then told Ms Hammond whether they enjoyed the food or not. Thank you to Ms Hammond for organising this event. 5S children had a particular interest in the campaign to not close the local market.

Parent Summary Y5 – Spring 1

Parents Reading Morning

We really enjoyed having our parents in to read with us. We value reading at home. It helps us so much at school.

Library of Everything Legacy

On Friday 24th November 2017, 5S ventured out to St Ann’s Library which is only a ten minute walk from St Ignatius School!

In the library, we found a wonderful Post Box with Book Suggestions decorating the outside of the marvelous display.

5S discussed Peabody’s most recent letter to St Ignatius School, revealing that the Library of Everything has now landed in Pompeii!

Children in Year 5 then talked about and wrote down their book suggestions for young readers, sharing their reasons for recommendations as a class.

After this, we sat in a circle and reflected on our experience in The Library of Everything. We thought of all of the items, both microscopic and gigantic! We used our senses to remember each detail of the library and then thought of an object that stuck out for us. After this, we imagined our own library. Well! The items we described and envisioned were incredible. They included an antique bottle of perfume, the Holy Bible, a transporter, a giant Flamingo bookshelf, a secret passageway and a trampoline.

We hope to use these imaginative ideas (and our five senses!) in our own story writing in future.

Thank you to the staff at St Ann’s for having us!

We will be back again soon to visit and make use of the wonderful books you have to offer.

Healthy Eating Workshop

We have been shown how to make healthy snacks when we get home from school. We found out that in a 1 mile radius of this school there are 36 chicken shops. We know we have to eat more healthily.

Tower of London Visit

We have just come back from The Tower of London trip. We learnt about the Battle of Hastings and William I and Harold Godwinson. We felt so privileged to live in a beautiful city.

Inside My Head Project
Children in Year 5 discussed what is important to them and what they think about. We discussed our faith, families and future ambitions. The children used newspaper and magazine cut outs to share what goes on inside their head! Check out our new corridor display outside the Year 5 classrooms in the Briant Building.
Roald Dahl Day 2017
Every year, children all over the UK (and the world!) celebrate Roald Dahl’s Birthday (13th September) by remembering his wonderful, wordy work! This year, children in Year 5 worked in groups to complete a variety of tasks to show our appreciation for the world famous author. We discussed Roald Dahl’s famous books and his eventful life. Come and see our display on the ground floor of Briant Building.

Our Core Learning Skill

This term our core learning skill is “Knowing me, Knowing you”. Stiggy has been helping us to remember our I can statements.
