At the beginning of the Spring term Mrs Lourdes Keever was elected as Chair of the Governing Body.

Gareth Foulsham continues as vice chair and Anna Maria Wallis has become an Associate member of the Governing Body.

 Dear Parents

We are setting up a Parent Staff Association and I hope you find the following information useful (extracted from the PTA UK website).

Starting a Parent Staff Association [PSA]

A PTA is an excellent way to bring together parents, teachers and your local community to raise money and to support the school.  It provides an opportunity for everyone to work together  towards a common goal.  All parents, teachers and school staff can get involved even if they only have a small amount of time available and your school will benefit from the addition funds it will raise and the increased opportunity for parents to be more involved in school life.

What does a PSA do?
PSA activity varies from school to school and includes the following:

  • raise funds to help the school provide resources and extras for the pupils
  • run social events for parents and children
  • provide support for school trips and outings and other special events
  • run after-school clubs for sport, music/drama
  • organise meetings to inform parents about education issues, especially when changes are taking place.

What does the Chair do?

The Chair of the PSA provides leadership for the committee, sets the agenda for meetings and manages meetings in line with the agenda.

What does the Secretary do?
The role of secretary of the PSA involves sending out agendas prior to meetings, taking minutes during the meetings and distributing the minutes to all relevant parties.

What does the Treasurer do
The Treasurer’s role is to keep the finances of the PSA in good order.

Hello Parents

It was great to see so many of you at our meeting, just before the half term holidays, to discuss setting up a Parent Staff Association. The next step is to organise a General meeting to vote for a Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary. We will advertise the date of the General Meeting in a future newsletter – if you are interested in putting yourself forward for any of these posts and you haven’t done so already, please let Mr Bonner know.

If you would like to know more about the role of the PSA and that of the Chair, Treasurer and Secretary please refer to the article I have posted on our website today.

In the meantime, we know that there are many of you who want to help out but do not want the responsibility of taking on an official role so we would be grateful if you could get involved in our community event

Dear Parents,

I had the pleasure to attend these informative meetings. I was impressed with the amount of work the school does. It has been an excellent opportunity to talk to a wide range of staff from teaching assistants, teachers, chair of governance, headteacher, etc. This has given me the opportunity to understand better how the school operates, and now I can see the dedication and commitment of everyone at school. It is wonderful to know that I could always come to St Ignatius and someone will be there to answer my questions. I am very pleased indeed!

Dear Parents

It was nice to meet some of you in person at the two parent meetings we held last term.  Thank you for sharing your views on a wide range of issues including homework, school lunches, teaching practices and school policy.    I was struck by parents’ enthusiasm to support the school and make their views known.  In response we arranged a meeting to discuss your concerns about homework and the school’s homework policy  We also arranged an opportunity for parents to sample school lunches and speak to our Chef.    More recently we invited parents to a meeting with staff and governors as an opportunity for you to raise any matters you wished to discuss.   Thank you to those parents who attended and for the positive feedback you gave us about the meeting on homework.

As you know, we are further canvassing your views by distributing a Parent Survey this week.  Please ensure you make your voice heard so that we get a better understanding of all your views.  Many of you cannot attend meetings and anyway these meetings can sometimes become more focused on concerns as opposed to praise.  We need to know what you think we are doing right as well as what you think we could improve.

In the meantime please note that we will be presenting more information about how the school is performing on our website (by clicking here) and we will be translating everything into Spanish and Polish and any other languages you request.  We will also publish information on the topics discussed at Governing Board meetings so that you can see how the Governing Body acts as a critical friend to St Ignatius – If you are interested in hearing more about any particular subject raised at these meetings please do not hesitate to contact me via the school.

Finally, I understand that some parents would find it useful to get a better understanding of the expectations on parents resulting from the Government’s new education curriculum (go to Class News, select the class and look for ‘A guide for Parents’) implemented in September.  We are currently considering the best way of doing this ie through the web site, letter to parents or a specific meeting on the new curriculum.
